Large Early Post War Japanese Tin Sand Pail - Ostrich Cart with Princess
This large colorful early post war Japanese sand pail shows a princess being driven by a dog coachman in a cart pulled by an ostrich. The bottom inside the pail is a bas-relief mold of two fish. Press the pail into wet sand and leave behind two raised fish shapes.
The body of the tin pail is 4.5 inches ( cm) tall with the tin handle adding 3.5 inches ( cm) to the height. The top diameter is 6.25 inches ( 15.8 cm) and the diameter of the case is 5 inches (12.7 cm).
This pail is not in perfect condition. The pink sky and red area of the background is faded on one side. The other side is not faded, but does show the dirt of the ages and light wear. The inside walls of the pail have one The tin handle is spotted with rust in the grooves. The gold tone bottom of the pail shows age related darkening...a lot on the inside, just a few spots on the bottom.
It is still a nice, impressive pail that only shows up in Japan. One half is only good condition; the other half is very good.
