Vintage Japanese Sugoroku and Board Games

Vintage Japanese sugoroku board games, late Meiji period, post WW2

SUGOROKU are Japanese board games.  The e-Sugoroku or picture sugoroku  features a single sheet of paper with illustrations, divided into spaces where players aim to move from “Furidashi” (Start) to “Agari” (Goal).

Older (pre WW2) sugoroku have a  more muted color scheme and often touch on historical events..wars for example with recent military events, territorial expansion, notable military leaders etc.

At the end the Meiji era (1912),  E-Sugoroku spread throughout Japan with the development of mechanical printing and became popular as supplements in boys’, girls’, and women’s magazines.

I have had some games from the 20's and 30's, mostly “Dochu Sugoroku” (Travel Sugoroku) and  “Meisho Sugoroku” (Famous Places Sugoroku): the ones with cute animals but accurate modes of transportation and /or historic sites.

Still, the most appealing are the post war ones. They seem to be more about playing and entertainment.

These are the colorful sugoroku I liked best. They had the same color palette as the early 50's Japanese toys and featured images from Japanese comic characters and heroes.
